Transformer Oil Purification Machine

The Transformer Oil Purification Machine controls the oil condition to be good to extend the transformer’s lifetime and decrease the costs because the oil is not required to be replaced.

Electricity is one of the most pivotal industries that has an important role in the economic growth of a country. So, each country seeking economic growth must develop its electric power industry. Manufacturing and commissioning generators and power stations are two necessary factors to achieve this goal. Electric power transmission and distribution are two inseparable factors of this system.

Electric power distribution from a power station needs an electric power transmission network and this important task is done through power/transmission/distribution transformers. Transformers are the most important part of an electric power transmission network. The transformer oil has the duty of cooling and insulating it. The transformer’s efficiency and lifetime depend on its suitable maintenance.

The oil quality is another important factor. So, controlling the oil condition is a good way to extend the transformer’s lifetime and decrease the costs because the oil is not required to be replaced. Some conditions can result in oil deterioration e.g. copper catalyst, iron filings, electric arc, moisture, and oxygen along high temperatures are the main factors that decrease the oil quality and cause deterioration. Some of these problems are increasing the acid number, moisture, and dielectric dissipation factor and decreasing interfacial tension, electric strength (breakdown voltage), and dielectric resistance, also the oil color gets blurry.

According to the problems mentioned above, we need a piece of equipment called a transformer oil purification machine. Having enthusiastic experts, Invex has manufactured this machine to help the electric power industry.

INVEX Transformer Oil Purification Machine Process

Purification is moisture extraction, degassing, and particulate filtration. The oil enters the system whereby it is heated by a set of electric heaters (indirect heat) at 65-70 before pumping through a pre-filter rated at 5 microns. From filters, it enters the vacuum chamber, and the oil passes through fiberglass coalescing elements where it is exposed to a high vacuum of 0.01 to be degassed and dehydrated. Finally, it passes through a fine filter rated 1 micron and then pumped out as processed oil. Extending the oil contact surface in heaters and omitting dead zones, Invex has speeded up the heating process which leads to energy consumption.

Role of oil in transformer:

  • Increase electric resistance
  • Control the temperature
  • Lubricant/ anti-abrasion and corrosion
  • Increase the transformer life
  • Sealant
  • Prevent electric arc

Factors causing oil dark color:

Oil contaminants like suspended particles and free water and oil aging and oxidation may be the reason for the oil’s dark color.

Factors cause oil electric breakdown (according to IEC 60156):

  • Suspended particles
  • Gases and air pockets
  • Moisture
  • Acidity: The aging process and degradation of oil are dependent on its acidity. The maximum acidity of oil should be 0.01 mgkoh/gr.
  • Oxidation: The oxidation occurs when the oil is exposed to a combination of heat and oxygen. Acid and polar compounds are formed because of oxidation and in turn, become sludge.

Factors cause particles in oil:

Paper insulation fibers, sludge from oxidation, and metal filings from wear and corrosion.

Gas generation sources of transformer oil:

  • Aged transformer
  • Transformer switching on
  • Oil oxidation
  • Tab changer
  • Transformer failure

Dissolved gasses in oil:

Nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, acetylene.

INVEX Transformer Oil Purification Machine Main Compartments Performance

– Vacuum chamber:

Shell and all internal parts are made of carbon steel. The oil is degassed and dehydrated in this chamber. A series of level switches, an optical probe, and a float-actuated level controller are in this vacuum chamber too.

– Oil filter:

Pre and magnetic filters prevent big metal particles from entering the system. Fine filters (1-micron rated filter) are in filter vessels that are made of aluminum. The differential pressure of the filter cartridge is continuously controlled by a pressure gauge and a pressure switch.

– Heaters:

Ceramic heaters are encapsulated in seamless steel tubes to be insulated from oil. The oil is heated indirectly and slowly. The heater is controlled by a safety valve and two analog and digital thermostats.

– Vacuum pump:

The oil is degassed and dehydrated in a vacuum chamber which is evacuated by a vacuum pump. There is an oil trap located between this chamber and the pump to avoid any moisture entering the vacuum pump.

– Oil interfacial tension according to ISO6295- ASTMD971:

Surface tension is the cohesive force between oil and water molecules. The surface tension of the new oil should be 40 mn/m. Low surface tension may result in some impurities such as chemical contaminants or some polar compounds.

– Stability against oxidation according to IEC61125-IEC60296:

This test is done to determine the level of sludge, acidity, and tan delta of oil. About 25 gr of oil is exposed to a copper ring at 120 C. The test duration is different depending on the oil type. (without antioxidant: 120 h, with antioxidant: 500 h). The oil viscosity is measured according to ISO 3104-ASTMD 445.

– Oil pour point according to ISO 3016:

The oil pour point is the temperature at which it becomes semi-solid and loses its flow characteristics.

– Vacuum booster pump:

Direct drive roots type vacuum booster is applied for flow rates over 3000 l/h to achieve maximum vacuum, degasification, and dehydration.

– Inlet/outlet pump:

These pumps are utilized to draw oil into and pump out of the system. Each pump is equipped with a pressure switch which trips in the case of any clogging or high pressure.

– Vacuum valve:

This valve is applied for evacuating or drying the transformer. Invex’s transformer oil purification system can purify the oil and evacuate the transformer at the same time.

– Control panel instrumentation:

All the equipment on the control panel is of known European brands such as Tele-mechanique and Siemens. The control panel can be equipped with a fan for special climates like tropical climates. A series of instruments, alarms, and interlocks are available to provide fully automatic operation.

– Tan delta according to the IEC60247 standard:

The tan delta depends on polar and ionized molecules in oil. Tan delta is sensitive to the contamination generated during the purification process. Even only a small amount of contamination (suspended particles, sludge, deposits) can be multiplied rapidly. Excessive increase in tan delta can result in thermal instability.

– Inlet /Outlet Hoses:

These hoses are suitable to be used under vacuum conditions.

– Trailer:

The trailer is designed and manufactured according to the standard. It is equipped with a braking system, axel, and spring suspensions, and is urban road-worthy (30 k/h).

– PLC (Customized):

This digital computer is used to control the machine automatically. It can be equipped with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) which is used for transmitting mobile voice and data services.

– Moisture meter:

It is used for online measuring the percentage of water in oil. It can be connected to plc.

– Differential pressure sensor:

Two pressure gauges and a switch controller are used before and after filters to measure the differential in pressure. In the case of any clogging or high pressure, the pressure switch closes the electrical contact and stops the machine.

– Flow switch:

It is installed on the oil inlet/ outlet to control the oil
